Reasons Students Should Hire a College Tutor

By Amanda Cohen on July 10, 2017

College is hard. Period. No one can argue with this statement; even the smartest of people have a difficult time keeping up with the roller coaster ride that is attending college.

I am here to tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that it is not necessary to take on all the burdens of college on your own, especially when it comes to doing well in your classes. I strongly believe that hiring a tutor early in your college career is one of the best things you can do for yourself. If you want to know why, please read on!

Tutoring is “preventative care

Have you ever gone to the doctor when you weren’t sick just so you can get an update on your health and prevent any negative health concerns in your future? Well, hiring a tutor early on in college is essentially the same thing! No matter what class you are taking, at some point, it will get difficult. In addition, balancing three to five college courses at a time will take its toll on you.

Essentially, you need to act early enough so that you never feel like you are drowning. College courses always start with the easier/review material, but then they go into the big concepts. Check ahead in your syllabi and see what is coming up and start prepping two weeks earlier. By doing this, you will be able to give yourself some wiggle room when learning new and hard concepts.

Before every tutoring session make sure you compile a list of questions to go over; having a tutor isn’t just having someone help you do your homework, it is to have someone teach you the material so that you can do your homework on your own.

College tutors are not overly expensive

The beautiful thing about college is that there are thousands of people looking to make extra money who do so by tutoring. Because many tutors are either current undergraduates, recent graduates, or graduate school students, their prices are much lower than a typical tutor that you would find in a tutoring center.

Most college tutors charge by the hour and range between $25-$100 per hour. A lot of times tutors will offer you deals if you refer people to them and/or if you have been using that same tutor for a decent amount of time. One way to cut down on tutoring expenses if by finding a tutor who tutors in more than one subject.

For example, many math and/or science tutors are well-versed in more than just one type of math/science (i.e. calculus and algebra). If you are concerned about price, pick and choose which subjects you need a tutor for and/or only hire a tutor for a few weeks at a time.

Tutors can act as a fresh pair of eyes

There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to figure out a problem or concept after spending an ample amount of time reviewing the material. There is nothing better than having a fresh pair of trustworthy and understanding eyes when it comes to new material. You could theoretically ask your friends, but tutors are more trustworthy when it comes to fully understanding the material.

Can’t quite figure out a math problem and Google searches simply won’t cut it? Call your tutor. Reading over an essay and can’t edit your thesis statement? Call your tutor. If you can’t quite balance that silly chemistry equation? Call your tutor. Usually, if it is a small issue, your tutor can even text you or call you if he/she does not have time to see you in person. You can even utilize Skype!

Support

Like I said earlier, college is hard. A tutor can support you academically while also empathizing with you because they understand from experience the trials and trepidations of college courses. They see your struggles and, because of this, they can support you in a way that is both academic and emotional.

I cannot even count the number of times I vented to my tutor about classes and general social life. Sometimes you just need a pair of ears to listen to your concerns, and just chatting with your tutor can help you feel much needed emotional release. Yes, the main job of a tutor is to help with your schoolwork, but they are people just like you and can help you with other college issues because they have experienced these issues firsthand.

I hope that this list has encouraged current college students and rising college freshmen to hire a tutor. There is nothing more upsetting and frustrating than feeling like you can’t take a class because you don’t think you will ever be able to understand the material (I know this firsthand). Never be afraid to reach out for help. Good luck with all your academic endeavors!
